Sheila K and Claire

Shelia Kerr I was raised in the village of North Hatley, Quebec - the home to many generations of my mother's family. My brothers and I grew up amongst a large extended family.

I married a Vermonter in 2001. Our daughter Claire (now 5) was born in Burlington. Now a single mother, I am happy to have remained in Vermont and happier still that I have found Common Pastures. I am living in an exceptionally safe, interesting and vibrant community.

Before my arrival in Vermont I spent about 12 years combining education, travel and work. I graduated from The New School College in Montreal with a D.E.C in Humanistic Studies in 1990 and in 2000, finished my Honours B.A in First Nations Studies (Canadian Native Studies) from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. I travelled primarily in Western Canada and supported myself with a variety of jobs in very remote settings. - managing a teahouse at almost 7000ft in the Lake Louise area and as a cook in treeplanting camps in Northern British Columbia and Alberta, often accessible only by helicopter . I eventually landed in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, before the pull of the East slowly drew me back. It took about two years, with an extended stay in Nelson, BC but I felt it was time to finish the few remaining courses left to my degree and to settle down somewhat. I had been living (in the warmer months) in a converted 1979 Ford Econoline van - that was beautifully outfitted with a stove, bookshelf and bed that had allowed me great freedom.

These days, motherhood is my number one job and I am also part owner of a small renewable energy company based out of North Ferrisburgh, VT. We manufacture " Human Power Generators" which produce electricity by pedaling. www.windstreampower.com. We also sell small residential wind turbines. I love my work and especially enjoy the rapport with people from all over the world as we seek solutions to reduce our impact on the planet by sourcing innovative ways to lower individual power consumption.

I'm very happy that Claire and I are living lightly here at CVC in our modest energy efficient unit. I feel co-housing is an ideal setting to raise children. There is so much space for kids to play and run around and the safety to truly belong in each other's lives.
