Cara Taussig and Marty Gawron

We are reinventing ourselves, and the recent (summer ’04) move to Vermont and partnership in Champlain Valley Cohousing are part of the process. We are seeking to align our lives with our values, and we view cohousing and living more lightly on the planet as key to our happiness. We had a long list of criteria for where to live once we decided not to follow jobs around the country anymore. The list included a politically progressive, ecologically aware community, with four seasons, within driving distance of Marty’s family in Connecticut, with a strong Unitarian Universalist presence (for Cara), and the possibility of living in cohousing. Burlington/Charlotte fit all these, and more. So far, we love it here, and our first winter has only increased our enthusiasm. After 10 years of marriage, we are thrilled to finally establish some roots. Our current household consists of us and two fluffy gray cats, Smokey and Sugar. We are considering adoption, and think raising a child in a cohousing community is a wonderful idea.

Marty is from a BIG family – he is number 6 of 10 kids. He grew up in Woodbridge, Connecticut, outside of New Haven. Marty earned a degree in Political Science from Southern Connecticut State University, and spent many years working in research and analysis for the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority. Marty is currently working with developmentally disabled adults, and enjoys it very much. Marty loves food – growing it, shopping for it, preparing it, and especially eating it. His family of origin is Ukrainian, and ethnic specialties include borscht, stuffed cabbage and pyrogis. Other loves include sports (watching and playing), being a cat-parent, and having fun. Marty is the favorite uncle of 14 nieces and nephews.

Cara is from a small family – her parents and younger brother live in San Diego. Cara was born in California, grew up in Maryland, attended Haverford College near Philadelphia (with a year abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France), and earned an MBA in Connecticut. Cara worked at IBM in operations and strategy consulting for 4 years, then in operations management in the survey research industry for eight years. Cara’s job took us to Dallas in 2000, and after a couple of layoffs, we decided to sell our house and take a four-month camping trip out west. The experiences of our trip prompted Cara to become a student of ecology, psychology and simple living, and Marty and Cara both became politically active for the first time. Currently, Cara is working part-time from home putting together management training programs for a consultant, which affords her plenty of time to do the things she is most interested in (including several roles related to this cohousing community). Cara loves to read, travel, be in nature (walking, biking, cross-country skiing), grow flowers, and dream about and plan for the future.
