Jonathan, Lorelei and Finn Atwood

Originally raised in the suburbs of Boston, Lorelei lived in Northampton, Massachusetts after college, and grew to love the rolling hills and winding roads of the Pioneer Valley. After a few years of “what do I do with my life?”, she moved to New York City to study theater and pursue a career in acting. Several years into her Big Apple experience, one filled with the trials and tribulations of auditions, rejections, off-Broadway theatre, an occasional indie film or commercial, and waitressing, she met Jonathan. Around this time, Lorelei embarked on a new course of study focused on health and nutrition. Raised in a family of foodies and a father obsessed with everything local, organic, sustainable and delicious, it was a natural for Lorelei to be interested in health and nutrition. She became certified as a Holistic Health Counselor and started her own practice. Counseling clients, especially stressed-out working women, was challenging and gratifying. She began to see a pattern among these young, overworked professionals … PMS, headaches, candida, dehydration, anemia, mild anxiety. Helping them tune into their bodies was very rewarding. Soon thereafter, however, Lorelei began to feel the effects of living in NYC herself, and the stress, pollution and fast pace of the city all began to take their toll. It was about this time that Jonathan was offered a position in Melbourne, Australia, and he invited Lorelei to move there with him.

Jonathan was raised in Connecticut and attended Bowdoin College in Maine. He loved the cold, snowy winters, and the Vacation state’s abundant natural beauty. Jonathan has always been athletic, and has played tennis, squash and hockey since he was a kid. He is an avid hiker, and loves nothing more than to be in the woods with his son, Finn, riding on his back in a backpack, trekking through tall pines and talking about what animals might be burrowed in a random stump or hiding in a tree. After college, Jonathan first worked on a political campaign in Connecticut before heading to Washington, DC to work as a legislative aide to a Congressman from Michigan and then, Congressman Christopher Shays from Connecticut. Eventually, he went to work for a consumer products company in Connecticut as a corporate and public affairs representative. After a 12-year career, Jonathan took a hiatus for a couple of years, writing freelance magazine articles and volunteering as a nature hike leader for the Nature Conservancy. He also participated in two AIDS fundraising bike rides through Alaska and from Montreal to Portland, Maine. After those joyous but low paying years, a job came knocking, and Jonathan went to work for a large food company with a focus in government relations and corporate affairs. After a few years being based in New York, he was offered a position overseas in Melbourne, Australia.

Thus began an adventure that would bring us to the land Down Under, and then to Singapore, with lots of opportunities for exploring foreign lands. Jonathan was traveling quite a bit for work during this time - to China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and New Zealand ... though somehow we still found time to get married and have a baby. Finn’s arrival into the world changed everything, and we both started to miss our families desperately. Finn was born in Singapore and by the time he turned one, we were back in the US, this time at corporate headquarters in Illinois. Jonathan was now working as the company’s Director of Commodity Sustainability Programs, with an emphasis on the company’s sustainable coffee program. We loved our quaint neighborhood and our charming little house, but our extended family still felt far away on the East Coast, and we began to think about what we wanted … really wanted, for our family and our lives. We started asking each other and ourselves the “what if” questions. We started thinking outside the box that we had constructed in our minds, and we started to get really excited about the possibilities. We reached the same state of mind at the same time and Jonathan resigned his position. We were ecstatic and on cloud nine, and had not a clue where we would go or where Jonathan would work. Sometime during this whirlwind, we paid a visit to CVC, and now we had a vision for the kind of life we wanted. Things seemed to accelerate at warp speed, and within three months, we had sold our house, Jonathan had secured a consulting client in Vermont, and we moved to CVC.

So here we are! We have found the people here to be caring, brilliant and helpful. The land is gorgeous and awe-inspiring. Finn loves to visit the animals down at the farm. My husband commutes to work down country roads surrounded by wonderful farmland with views of mountain ranges, and the air is clean and clear. We are so happy we changed the course of our lives and chose to move here, to live among neighbors with similar values and a desire to live in community. Knowing that Finn will grow up running through these fields, skating on the pond, playing with his new friends and neighbors, and eating organic food from this land ... we feel utterly blessed.
